The Indigenous Genomics Institute (IGI) is a kaupapa Māori charitable trust that began coalescing in 2020 in recognition that a gap existed in “for Māori, by Māori” guidance and support around genomics. We embed the principles of Te Ao Māori, including mātauranga Māori in our mahi. Through this we aspire to be a resource and a voice for hapori Māori, hapū, and iwi to educate whānau about genomics, empower them to utilise genomics for their own kaupapa, and to engage with genomics researchers.
Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi: We aim to connect hapori Māori, Māori genomic scientists, and kaupapa Māori kairangahau with interests in the tikanga surrounding genomics through initiatives such as wānanga and webinars [link to hui/wānanga]. If you are in any of these categories, and interested in this kaupapa, please get in touch.
Hapaitia te ara tika pumau ai te rangatiratanga mo nga uri whakatipu: We aim to build resources to support hapori Māori utilising genomics, including developing te reo Maori resources for kura and providing a place for pātai to be answered. Visit our Rauemi.
He taonga tuku ihō no ngā tūpuna: By facilitating interviews with tohunga, we support the development of a tikanga based understanding of genetic and genomic research.
